Home made chips, egg and beans.... im drooling now  Id completely forgotten that an evening meal doesnt have to be something spectacular! We used to have loads of bread and butter, make chip egg and bean sandwiches out of it and have a big mug of tea.

Id also make cheese on toast (red leicester too - its pretty much the only cheese I like) with beans, and if flush, have bacon and cheese on toast with beans.

Crikey, this takes me back

As a child (and poor) my widowed mother could do marvels with anything! She was a wonderful but homely cook.

Sunday teatime would be poached egg on bubble n squeak if flush (bacon if my eldest brother were on leave!) or if not so flush, bubble n squeak with a blob of hm ketcup.
Other times it might be hm bread rolls. (especially is we had stressed mum out ... she'd wouldn't shout, she'd knead bread! Worth tweaking her serenity just for the fabulous rolls! :o:o )

Warmer weather was often her version of vinaigrette (basically any leftover limp lettuce chopped and soaked in vinegar :rotfl: ) with cheese straws and sandwiches. Followed by hm buns.

In the winter she would make a HUGE Christmas cake which seemed to last for months afterwards as a Sunday teatime treat with a slice of cheddar.

Boiled egg with l/o yorkshire pudding "soldiers" were something I recall having too!

I must go and write up some notes in my ancestry journal, you've got my mind really whirring now

My mother couldn't or wouldn't cook, we sometimes had steak & kidney, but not in a pie & never any potatoes or veg, the only other thing she cooked was smoked haddock again served alone, no veg or anything. There was also never any food in the house on a regular basis, no bread or cereals, though there was usually a pint of milk. This wasn't due to lack of money, we didn't have a lot, but she was a teacher & my Dad was a driving instructor. I don't think she was interested in cooking & suchlike. I found it difficult when I first got married as I wasn't used to eating regularly, never mind cooking!

Our Sunday tea was different, it was the only day in the week that we ate at lunch time, the rest of the week we had our main meal in the evening.

Bread and jam, usually homemade, then tinned fruit and nestles cream, the thick stuff, scones and cake..... if I did not have at least 2 slices of bread I was not allowed anything else...............guess who ate up the bread and jam as quick as she could!!!! In the winter we had piklets toasted in front of the fire with jam, I loved those, still do, home made ones do not taste the same.....

My grandmother was an excellent cook, but I was never allowed in the kitchen, it was onlt after I had cookery lessons in school and she realised I could cook that I was occasionally allowed to cook something simple, never a full meal though.

My Aunt was resposible for me really getting expereince, she was pregnant and had to rest, she had 3 miscarriages before she managed to carry a baby to full term, so I was sent up once a week to her house to bake whilst she rested............this was also my first experience with a washing machine, we used a dolly tub and posher at home, but my uncle bought a washing machine..........it was brilliant, I volunteered to go and do the washing as well, but left them to do the ironing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This thread is bringing back memories for me too. We used to have a roast at 1pmish and for tea we had toast or crumpets with a cake of some sort,(usually swiss roll) with a cup of tea or milk.
