OS Teatime

I have just been faced with two starving kids and not alot in the fridge for tea, so I decided that I would make them the sort of tea which I often had as a child when money was very tight. My Mum often had little or no money to spare and I used to love it when she would tell us on the way home from school that it was a "toast tea". That meant thick slices of home made bread, toasted on one side, turned over and spread with some anchor butter (or Echo margarine it things were really bad) and slices of red leicester cheese and a pineapple ring and toasted until golden and/or sardines or pilchards, mashed with vinegar and tomato ketchup and toasted until warmed through. We always had junket afterwards and a big mug of tea with sugar in and I thought this was the best tea ever. I have just made this for my kids (except that I didn't have junket, so they had jelly and evap) and they loved it!! DD1 is veggie so didn't have the sardines but loved the cheese and pineapple on toast, and DD2 scoffed the lot (as did I)!! Both of them said it was a fab tea and when could they have it again. I remember lots of cheap teas like this but have never made them for my kids because I am always trying to be creative with pasta and veg and stuff and it was a lovely change. What kind of OS teas do you all remember? And does anyone know if they still make junket mix? I used to absolutely love it!!

I always liked Buck Rarebit with sauteed potatoes in butter...scrummy!! Sometimes on a saturday lunch we have like an afternoon tea with triangle sarnies (egg/cress, grated cheddar, tuna/cucumber) and they have to be crustless. Sometimes have pate on toast or cheese on toast with a pot of tea, jug of milk and sugar bowl.

LOL - my mum always made 'proper' teas for us when we were kids but she commented it was on the rare occasions we would have beans on toast for tea, that my sister - instead of just shouting 'tea's ready' when we were out playing, would always shout 'tea's ready and it's beans on toast'.
It's true though - we spend ages thinking of different and interesting meals to tempt the younger generation, when sometimes all they want is boiled egg or a slice of toast

This is the sort of tea I do on Tuesday when my boys have judo and therefore have to eat earlier. They always seem pleased as punch with beans on toast.
My mum used to have an emergency toast pud - fried/toasted jam sandwiches. She usually did them in a sandwich maker. She served them cut in two in a pudding bowl with whipped cream. You had to be very careful of the hot jam.
She had another quick pud too- bananas and cream. She sliced a banana each into a pudding bowl, mixed it with a goodly amount of whipped cream and a spoonful of raisins/sultanas and a sprinkling of brown sugar. It's really the only way I like bananas.Unfortunately only one of my 3 likes both bananas and cream,Ds 1 doesn't like bananas and Ds2 doesn't like cream

We like baked beans on toast with some grated cheese on top and popped in the microwave for a few seconds to melt the cheese.
As a child, we often had sardines on toast at Sunday teatime -followed by tinned fruit and evap milk (I thought the peach halves with evap milk around them were like fried eggs!)0 -
My fave tea was similar to Rachie B, potato waffles, baked beans and fried egg..yum!
Another one was makerel fillets on toast, my nan used to make it for me.£2.00 Coin Savers Club - £72.00 :j :j

My favourite teas were our sunday tea's...we used to eat a big roast on sunday lunch time so tea time didn't need to be anything big. If we went to my nans we would have a cheese sandwich (now being my Nan it would be home made white bread, thick butter and only one small slice of cheese...but it was fab) and then we would have a slice of home made cake and some tinned fruit with carnation milk and a slice of bread and butter; and it was my idea of heaven.
My mom would often do us a chunk of cheese on a plate, with some pork pie, black pudding, salad and brown sauce with a wedge of fresh bread and butter...and I never have this now as I am always watching my weight, but just the thought of it makes my mouth water mmmmmmmmm0
