Hello,
I have a problem with my laptop and im not sure what to do with it. I bought it from PC World and i want to know if anyone knows what the returns procedure is.
It is a packard bell and when it has been on for let say 2 hours it will suddenly turn off. The base is extremely hot and the fan is very very noisy. I do study computing but im still unsure whats wrong with it. Could it be the fan? or the processor? Anyhoo, i want to take it back and get a full refund, i dont want to be associated with PC World, i just dont like their service or their inferior products. The main problem is that i want a replacement or refund as i cannot be longer than 2 days without my laptop as i have a load of deadlines due soon and need to get them done.
I went in today to explain my situation and the assistant said that it has to be sent away for at least a week to be 'diagnosed' and fixed. I dont want it fixed i want a new laptop for the problems, why would i want the rubbish one back? So anyway, what are my rights? am i entitled to a replacement or refund?
Has anyone got a clue on what to do? or what rights i have?
P.S. It takes the mick when they ask you to phone an 0845 number to get the laptop you bought of them fixed.
thanks for your time
Tom

It could well be overheating. Clear dust etc. from the vents with a vacuum cleaner and then try raising the laptop with a book or suchlike so that there is bigger air gap and see if the machine stays on longer.
You can also buy a notebook riser to do the same thing, or an external fan - see http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?rb=17522232892&action=c2hvd3N1YmNhdGVnb3J5X3BhZ2U=&subcat_uid=6250 -
i do prop it up and i have tried to clean the fan, but i bought a laptop to either use on ma lap, which i cant because i would become sterile with the heat. And to do my work on, which i cant because it fluffs up. Do u think i have a case to return it?0

they will not refund for it, unless it has not been used. once opened, it goes to repair only. i have seen simliar problems on PB laptops, and i is most certainly the fan. it is an easy fix, so if you do not want to go to pcworld, dont. just purchase a replcement fan and fit it0

when did you get it... Im sure you can get a refund or replacement if its within 28 days. Its states this on thier website for thier delivery items but Im sure this is applicable to bought items from the store (not collect @ store for some reason)0

woaaaaaaa.
Entering the laptop may void your warrenty COMPLETELY. It may have silver stickers on some seals so PB can tell if its been opened. They can be real idiots if the seals are broken.
Laptops do get hot, but it shouldnt burn your knee, also if its brand new then it shouldnt need cleaning of dust (unless you live on a demolition site)
The fan prolly is at fault, dodgy bearing making it spin slowly causing more heat and more noise.
Laptops are a pain to get into, even more so if you dont have the correct tools.
I'm not sure about the warranty of this product but I would guess at you having to leave it at least once (giving them chance to correct the problem) then if its still not right asking for a full refund.0 -
to change the fan normally does not void the warranty, but i cant be 100% without the model.
i returned a faulty laptop 2 days after i bought it. since the fault was not there on purchse, and developed afterwards, thy will not refund, it is pc world policy i am afraid. i spent an hour arguing the 28 thing with the manager and got no where. your only option with pcworld is let them fix it, or haveit done elsewhere. any good pc shop can do the fan in minutes [they will have to order the fanfirst]0 -
I've got an Inspiron 6000 which was faulty and was replaced but both machines caused burns to my right knee, so probably just dell being crap...
Did you buy the laptop on a credit card? if they are being difficult, phone up your credit card company and ask them to lodge a chargeback or dispute the transaction.spacey0 -
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0
