Is this the right place for a guitar sale?

Hi

Bit of a rambling post, apologies!

We are holding a pitch at a car boot on Sunday. I am thinking about selling my guitar (acoustic with electric capability) and case. Basically used the guitar twice so it's in perfect condition!

I'm not sure however, that a car boot is the right place for such a good quality guitar? In my mind car boots are for bric-a-brac, older items etc... however, this is my first pitch so not entirely sure.

I wouldn't want to take less than I feel it should go for, however, could very possibly make an easy sale, with only the pitch overhead. Space is at a premium in the small car so not sure if it would be a waste of time?

If not, does anyone know where is a good place to sell a guitar for minimum cost?

Thanks
GJ x

What sort of guitar is it? Is it a low end copy of a popular brand such as fender or gibson that you paid 150 quid or so for? Or is it an original from a mid range brand (e.g yamaha) or a top manufacturer?

If its the first yes, car boot it by all means.

I'd avoid ebay etc, that doesn't work well. I've bought from things like gumtree and craigslist before, and you don't have to pay to advertise on them.

If its a high end instrument, or even an out-of production mid range original, you might want to invest a small amount in putting ads in your local music shops!

Thanks el_gringo. It's a lovely high gloss dark green Santa Ana TF656p - acoustic with electric equalizer etc....strangely can't find much info online about these guitars. I think the guitar was £180 and case (very well padded) was £30-40ish. We stay in a smallish town - no local music shops unfortunately.

Well. Thats a strange one - I've not heard of Santa Ana but the tf656p is a Westfield product number, is this make obvious anywhere? I know they came in blue or red and were 'active' (the equalizer bit!), its likely they did green too.

Its definately not a booter though. Car boots are usually good for selling the 'copycat' fully eletric guitars of which (even if it is a westfield, who are a cheaper make) this is not one.

Sounds daft but i would also suggest selling the case seperatley if its a hard case - you'll get twenty five quid for it, yet it probably only will add 5-10 on the value of the guitar. Especially if you live in the sticks.

Cheers. I'll take your advice. It takes up quite a lot of space in the car and wouldn't want it to get damaged. It doesn't have Westfield anywhere on it - just Santa Ana and the TF656P. I bought it in 2001/2 (I know, only played a couple of times) but it was a bit sentimental as I used a bit of inheritance money to purchase it. However, I really don't know why I'm holding onto it, I don't play and have pretty much lost the inspiration to play.

Do you know if there is a dedicated online music site I could try? Wanted to stay away from Ebay if poss.

    Thanks again for your help.

edit - on glance in full day light it looks green/blue - perhaps Westfield took over from Santa Ana?

I don't know of a dedicated ebay style site although there is UK guitars. com , they take about 25% commission though. Adtrader have a musicians section too.

Your best bet is your nearest university city will doubtless have some kind of local music fanzine with a website tied to it, usually read by almost every muso in the city. If Leeds or Sheffield is your closest, I could help you further, fraid i'm not too familiar with the particularities of other cities live music scenes!

Might be worth emailing westfield and seeing if the guitar is one of theirs. The only other mention of Santa Ana as a make is on a US gear review site where a santa ana dreadnaught (a larger acoustic) scores VERY well. If this was a small company that only produced a couple of models then folded, you might want to keep hold of it as there could well be someone out there willing to pay well above the odds for it, as the reviews are very favorable towards its sound and playability!

PM Avoriaz, he's the guitar buff around these parts. At £180 new though its going to be more the bottom end of the guitar market and prices dont hold as well.

You could try a specialist auction If you photograph the guitar then e mail the photo to various auction houses and see how much they think you could get
