Hi guys,
I need some help please, I need to buy a new laptop, and I am completly hopeless at techie stuff
, I have a budget of up to £400, but would like to spend about £300 if possible, I only need to use it for MSE :money:, facebook, etc, but I also need to be able to download photos etc.
Would anyone be kind enough to give me some recomendations ?? I dont mind a reconditioned one, I have one at the moment, which is fine, its a Advent T2080, and one similar to this would be great.
I am completly hopeless at stuff like this, so please be gentle
Thanks so much

You couldn't go too far wrong by starting out and reading the latter pages of the The Great 'Cheapest Decent Laptop' Hunt thread near the top of the page.0

£300 condemns you to the cheapest model in most ranges (if looking at a new one). Spending £350 will get you a much better machine (though for your purposes any laptop will do the job). I would have a look at the Dell Outlet site and see if you can get an Inspiron 15 with Core Duo processor within your budget. Don't settle for less than 2GB RAM, and preferably 3GB.No free lunch, and no free laptop0

Hi, thanks for the answers, I have found these below,
ADVENT
6552
*REFURBISHED* 17" DUAL CORE LAPTOP, 3GB MEMORY & 250GB HARDDRIVE
£349.00
ADVENT
6553
*REFURBISHED* 17 "DUAL CORE LAPTOP, 4GB MEMORY & 320GB HARDDRIVE
£369.00
ADVENT
5313
*REFURBISHED* CORE 2 DUO LAPTOP, 2GB MEMORY & 200GB HARD DRIVE
£339.99
Which one of these would you reccomend ?
Sorry for being so helpless, I am going through a bit of a tough time at the moment, and my head is all over the place0 -
Sorry, but given your original budget, I asumed you were looking for a 15 inch laptop. But 2 of the above are 17 inch and the last is 15 inch, so you're hardly comparing like with like.
You won't get a new 17 inch laptop within your budget.
I would not be looking for an Advent, which is DSG's house brand. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Thank you, I was only looking at an Advent because its the one I currently have, and which seems fine, I really need to pick one up today if possible, so might have a look at my local currys. Which make do you think I should be looking at ??
Thanks again0 -

Impossible to answer that without knowing what screen size you want. I would suggest that if you don't know that, you should not be rushing out and buying today. Of the two 17 inchers, the latter is a much better spec for only £30 extra-more RAM and a bigger hard drive.
I would draw up your basic spec and then have a look at Dell Outlet, you'll get a much better machine than a DSG refurb. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

I wouldn't say it was much better. Unless it comes with a 64 bit edition of Windows, there isn't really going to be any difference between 3 and 4 GB of RAM. PCs that come with 32 bit editions and 4 GB of RAM are just a marketing gimmick.
The bigger hard drive would probably be worth paying the extra for though.I would draw up your basic spec and then have a look at Dell Outlet, you'll get a much better machine than a DSG refurb.
I agree; see what Dell have.0 -
If your looking for super fast/topspec, do yourself a favour jump off the laptop bandwagon and buy a desktop.
If you need a laptop for email and general web browsing on the move, get a refurbished business grade machine for £150 - £300. I own currently 2 IBM T41's, they're really fast, super slimline and really, really well built.
I wouldn't touch any of the poorly built shop brought laptops with a 50ft bargepole let alone a 10ft.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”
