Sealing kitchen upstands

I have recently had a new kitchen fitted. We have a gloss laminate worktop and matching upstand. Am I right in thinking the join between the worktop and the upstand should be sealed with silicone sealant? Especially behind the sink? The fitter doesn't appear to have done this (unless there is silicone underneath the upstand which not visible?) Also, our walls are quite uneven and there are some gaps at the top of the upstand where it doens't sit flat against the wall. Again should these gaps be filled - with silicone sealant or polyfilla? The fitter will be back later in the week and was wondering if i should ask him about this. i don't want the upstands getting wet and swelling as they were quite expensive!

Yup, they should be sealed along the join with the worktop and any gaps against the wall should also be filled, if not just to make it look better, but it will stop anything falling behind or "growing" in there...

It would be a lot better if any filling/jointing done was with a silicone sealant...
If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands
