why ???

I have noticed recently and I know I have posted them too a lot of people struggling with motivation and I thought perhaps we could all look at ourselves and see if we could identifiy the triggers then when we all start to feel down we can remind ourselves what has triggered our feelings off and then allow ourselves to recover a bit quicker.

So i will go first- when I am tired, 1/2 way through the month I get really down and loose motivation for everything not just money saving I have found that as I have identified these as my triggers I tend to ignore it more now and pretend the day has not happened but i am able to say this is the day i go out with no money or means of getting money so i cant spend today.

Welcome to therapy

whenever I find something else going pearshaped like this rent arrears thing, I lose motivation completely. Now I am in the situation that I want to go out and buy myself something nice to cheer me up. Lol it will be a snickers and nothing else!
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.

When things look like they are about to be sorted, then you get some bad news and everything slides. I just looked at my statement and ive been charged again by the bank for being over my overdraft

wow, this is gonna be a good one!

I lose motivation when I'm hungry and I've not planned my meals properly so got naff all in the flat to eat, that is when I know only a Dominos pizza/chinese takeaway/big pub dinner will cure my frustration! This in turn causes me despair when a few days later I find the receipt at the bottom of my handbag! From there it is a nasty vicious circle!!!

Shazzer...suggest you keep a secret stash box of tins/packets and only raid it when there is nothing else left...although take away pizza is nice!

Definitely when I'm tired I lose my determination, for money saving and healthy eating (trying to do the both at once!). I can't be bothered to make healthy (and cheap) food, instead I just want takeaway or something, same as you shazzer. Also when I'm tired its usually cos I've been working hard and so I convince myself that I deserve a treat - usually food or spending related!! Identifying these things over the last few months has helped to control them.

Also, when I feel lonely or am fed up with housemates (again :rolleyes) I don't feel good in myself and don't feel motivated to look after myself so I don't care about healthy eating or bank balance, if that makes sense? Then shopping and eating are a way to comfort mysellf. Again, I'm more aware of this than I was but its hard to break long held habits!!

Sometimes I allow myself a small treat (small chocolate bar, newspaper etc) when I start to feel miserable rather than let it get worse and end up blowing lots on something really unhealthy (for me or finances!). Then if I feel like a treat I know I've already had one and there's no justification, seems to work for me (most of the time!).

    Good thread! :D

I think the main thing that will get me down is when i know its the debt thats stopping me doing things, then i start to hammer myself on stupidity of the past.

Luckily i seem to be having less of those days recently due to general calmness and the debt i have paid off so far.

Still when it hits, it really hits home :S

The bad motivation days always strike for me in conjunction with a really good dose of PMT, when I want to kill everyone anyway - and suddenly I don't care that I'm broke, and I just want to blow loads of money on something expensive and pointless to cheer myself up! And I don't care! So there!!!

The only good news is that I also get hopelessly indecisive when I've got PMT, so I usually can't even decide what to buy that is expensive and pointless - and while I'm dithering I just get crosser and crosser and -

I've just read this through and I sound like a complete headcase - please someone tell me I am not the only one whose motivation goes out of the window with depressing regularity ......
  • I must be a headcase too!!! :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

    I like this thread.

At the moment I'm feeling unmotivated as I'm tired, not feeling great, want to go out and do things but want to pay off my debt, I love chinese takeaways and haven't had one in so long, and it takes a lot more planning to sort out dinners and lunches, and to eat healthily too. I'm rambling now

Hi PurplePrincess, could you not use Chinese takeaways as a motivational tool? I sometimes decide that if I have managed to save xxx by the end of the month/or paid xxx off my cc's/sold xxx on Ebay then I will treat myself to a takeaway/night out/whatever I really fancy doing. That way I can look forward to having the takeaway, but ONLY if I acheive something else money-saving first.

Whatever works, that's what I say. And I'm so sorry you're feeling low at the moment, here's a virtual hug
