I am in the same position: I have an HD ready TV but it is not showing anything yet. Yes, the TV may be HD ready but you need a box to receive the services, and to pay a regular subscription or a one-off payment.
There are not too many programmes being made in HD at the moment. I believe that Sky and FREESAT (the BBC) one provide HD services.Who having known the diamond will concern himself with glass?

You didn't mention how you are currently receiving your TV. To get HD you either need to subscribe to Sky and get the Sky HD service, or go the Freesat non-subscription route for which you will require a Freesat HD box and a satellite dish.
HD Ready or Full HD TV's can display HD programmes, but the built in digital tuners are SD only, they cannot receive HD, which is why you still need an external HD box
There are no HD channels on Freeview at present, and even if they come along in a few years time, you will still need a Freeview HD box (as opposed to Freeview SD) to receive them.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
HD ready you will have either 720p, 1080i etc, full HD = 1080P.
1080P is for blueray etc,
sky, virgin do not transmmit in 1080p I think it is 720p only, so your tv will be fine for this.
if you want full 1080p from bluerays you need a new telly0 -

As well as Virgin Cable, where available, but that, like Sky is subscription based.0
