Thanks for advice everyone she is much better in herself now.

Just another quick question though I have since found out that these 2 dogs have bitten 2 other dogs in similar circumstances although none has been seriously hurt. Ive spoken to owner and although she was good yesterday making sure gates were closed properly attention has already started to slip today so that twice I have had to go and close their gate myself. Took my dog to the field earlier and ended up tying her lead to a fence on way back so I could go and check gate was closed before I came past (it wasn't and dogs were in garden). I can't trust them to keep gate closed and cant avoid walking past as live in a cul de sac.
Im going to speak to owner again tomorrow but if this doesn't get sorted is there anyone can speak to at all? They have attacked 3 dogs now and next time it could be a child. Dont want the dogs PTS or anything but think owner needs a good reminder that her dogs need to be properly controlled and fenced securely in as they obviously have problems with other dogs.

I would fone and speak to your local council dog warden or Rspca and just explain your circumstances.
I'm in Scotland but I phoned and spoke to the dog warden and they came out to my neighbour and the problem promptly stopped.

  • dog warden may help - also, depending on the gate, fitting a spring and a catch may help, as for a few quid you can make the gate close itself every time.

When the dogs get out, presuably they could get onto a road / cause an accident? The DW is more likely to act for this reason, and for them being uncontrolled in a public place, than for them having a go at other dogs.

I agree with scruff, you could talk to the warden and I should think you could ask them to keep your call confidential - they could just say they had received concerns about the dogs/gate business. As they have bitten other dogs, she neednt know its you who was the complainant.

Oh and fc, who posted exactly same time as me :)

There is no law to say dogs can't attack other dogs unless the owners encourage it. Just because a dog barks and attacks another dog it doesn't mean that it will bite a child or any person. In fact RSPCA footage of organised dog fights show that the owners handle the dogs during fights safe in the knowledge the dog will not bite a human only the other dog. I am not justifying dogs attacking each other but please don't assume the dog will bite someone because its attacked another dog.

If you ring the dog warden they can assess the situation and they will tell the owner to make sure the gate is locked when the dogs are out or keep the dogs somewhere else. They won't deal with the dog attacking other dogs and they won't have the dog put to sleep (you'd need the owners permission or a court order)

However if the dog has bitten other dogs really the owner should realise they can't leave the dog unsupervised. If the dogs keep getting out you should keep reporting it to your Dog Warden as once the owner has been offically warned about it the Dog Warden can take legal action or fine the owner if the dog still gets out. If you don't think the Dog Warden is listening then speak to your local councillor (although give the Dog Warden a fair chance to sort the problem).
