I am currently using Windows XP Home edition Version 2002 Service Pack 3 and have a pop up appear saying that
'Files that are required to run properly have been unrecognized versions. To maintain system stability, Windows must restore the original versions of these files.
It asks for the XP Home edition CD-Rom to be inserted, but I don not have one of these.
Does anyone know how I can get over this problem because when I choose the cancel option the window keeps popping up every couple of minutes.

Have you tried doing a System Restore to a restore point before the problem started? Windows should automatically create a restore point every time you make any system-level changes to your computer.0

Try the link above first, if not then try a restore.0 -
I can't do a system restore because this was turned off and have only turned the option back on a few days ago.
I had a virus on the computer which caused it to not run properly, so reinstalled computer back to its original bought form.0 -
Under these circumstances I know what I would do
But the board rules probably prevent me from sayingAlways try to be at least half the person your dog thinks you are!0 -
Try pointing it to the i386 folder which contains all the system files. You may have to alter the registry. Post back if you don't know how.0

You need to run sfc but as you don't have the xp cd so:
Now you will need to tell your computer you now have the files on your PC. We do this is the registry (type regedit in the Run box on the start menu, but backup your registry first by using a prog called Erunt. If things go wrong use this prog to revert the registry) by navigating to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Setup
You will see various entries here on the right hand side. The one we want is called:
SourcePath
It probably has an entry pointing to your CD-ROM drive, and that is why it is asking for the XP CD. All we need to do is change it to:
C:\
Simply double click the SourcePatch setting and a new box will pop up allowing you to make the change.
Now restart your computer and try running sfc:
Go to RUN, type in cmd, and at command prompt type
sfc /scannow (note space). The scan will run and at the end should replace/repair any corrupt system files.0 -
This article talks about using sfc is you want some background:
