sferring songs from Windows Media Player to Itunes

I'm thinking of getting a Ipod Touch, but am put off because of previous problems with Itunes...was given an Ipod a few years ago as a present, but when I downloaded Itunes it would let me transfer my music from windows media player to Itunes. Never managed to solve this problem so Ipod was useless (Argos wouldn't take it back, so parents (who'd bought it for me) gave it to my sister).
Anyhow, just wondering if anyone had any suggestions of what I could try to get my songs onto Itunes?
