Supermarket brand powder is far cheaper than dishwasher tablets. I also use white vinegar instead of rinse aid.

cant wait till i get a big enough kitchen to have a dw i hate hate hate washing up, i get dw envy when i go to peoples houses and all they have to do is load it up and press the button and its done!!!
I have a tiny kitchen too. What I do is use it as a cupboard. I did have to buy a lot of extra mugs cutlery and plates so I wasn't taking them out to wash up by hand all the time. I only put mine on once a day except if I have been baking. I always come home from work to piles of washing up from my lot making food late at night and though I don't mind shoving it all in the DW I did mind having to wash it all up by hand. I know I know I should have trained them better.

I heard a tip on Radio 2 to use half a tablet in your dishwasher and it works fine.
  • I have attached the cold feed to the hot feed.
Also, I have economy 7, so I have set the DW up to a plug timer, so it comes on at 3am, AFTER the water has been heated in the tank AND it's cheap electric time for the DW as well!
Nice clean dishes waiting in the morning at a fraction of the day price!

A DW diva! I totally agree about the hot feed, I reckon it can save 15-20 mins. each wash and that`s approx 175Kwh.per annum for daily use! I`ve been putting mine on at 10.30pm, which is when my econo 7 comes on, but can see your point and will try the 3am.
  • We have a DW which i would not be without - its on once maybe twice a day, and only wash up things by hand that should not go in the machine. I usually use Ecover products to wash with, but if running short, or on a serious OS week, i use some borax and white vinegar to wash, and also put half a lemon on the top shelf - makes everything inside come out shining!! And SO much cheaper!!

I am a pensioner & have never had a dishwasher. I live in a small flat which could not accommodate one but would not want one anyway.I feel that there is nothing wrong with doing the dishes yourself & having been brought up without such a luxury I am happy to continue in the same vein.It always seemed like a good opportunity for a chat between one doing the washing & the other the drying up. I have been a house-sitter for the past 17 years and am amazed at how many extra dinner plate & cutlery sets are required if the machine is to be filled before use so as to be used in it's most economical way & hate the idea of dirty items being left for days until the machine is full & you still have to do the pans separately any way. I feel that it would be a useful discipline for children to get into the habit of helping out at "time to do the dishes time".

I put my pans in too!
  • Much easier to wash by hand. We have a dishwasher and if we don't rinse everything first, we then have to re do it by hand. By the time we have rinsed them items we might have well of washed them!!
  • There are eight of us living here on a good day (it's a house-share and there are four children). Example - one of the kids has had a birthday party today. We've had to load and unload the dishwasher four times - can you imagine the amount of time we'd have spent washing dishes for that? When you're running around after four kids, you haven't time to wash dishes.
