You can contact them if you reach a stage of impasse in a dispute with your supplier.

What dispute do you have and what has your supplier said/done/provided?

Or why else are you considering contacting the ombudsman

We had problems a few years ago with NPower , long story but basically they made a mess up of the start reading and when we corrected it they made a bigger mess! after 6 mths of not getting anywhere we wrote to energy watch who toke the case up and after a number letters to NPower they eventually got some where and it was sorted out. We couldn't of got any were with out their help, energy watch is not part of consumer direct. But what ever you do make sure you have copy's of letters/emails dates and times of phone call etc the more ammo they have the easier it will be to sort.(as soon as it was sort it we changed company)

The question posed by the OP was in relation to the energy ombudsman.

Energywatch was an entirely different organisation that has since been disbanded.

I have almost had to, but they won't touch your case unless you have completely followed the energy companies' own complaints procedure fully.

this is laid down by the Consumer Estate Agency Redress Act (Cears Act) you give the supplier the oportunity to resolve, then escalate within the company, if you still get nowhere after 8 weeks or if the supplier locks the complaint (ie based on what they have offered they feel you are being unreasonable) you can then to the ombudsman. whatever the ombudsman says is binding on the supplier, where they rule in your favour or not

Eighteen months of complaining to npower and simply not getting any substantive reply other than "you must be mistaken" and I made a complaint to the ombudsman.

After complaining to npower for 9 months the ombudsman won't touch the complaint even if it is ongoing. Don't allow your complaint to the energy company to drag on over 9 months!

I managed to get £75 compensation out of npower off my own efforts but it was a saga. Even when you respond to a named person there, once they see it is not straightforward they will not reply. Even the head of the customer service section would not reply to letters addressed to her even though that was the last part of the complaints procedure.
