help previous bank account loan

I need help, about 10 years ago i run a debt on my switch card and had to take out a loan to cover the cost, i think the loan was only for about £2000. I thought i had paid the debt so just left it there and moved out of my parents and am now with a different bank.
Now this morning i have received a letter from a credit agency acting for the bank asking for a payment for over £4000, this is the first time i have received any contact from them and never questioned it as i thought the debt had been paid. Now ive read somewhere that you dont have to pay a debt if it is over 6 years old and you have received no contact from them or made a payment in that 6 years, is this right? Can anyone help me please????
