Web site design, and simple editing

A friend of mine has a web site which needs re-designing from scratch. He mentioned that he has been quoted almost £2,000 (!) for creating a new site which would be easy for him to add changes himself.

I've got reasonable HTML skills and only fair graphic design skills, and I don't really have the time to help him out.

He would also like to have an online shop. I know that there are free carts which are very popular such as oscommerc and zen, but he would probably need it tweaking to fit in with the design of the rest of his site. If anyone would like to quote, I'd be happy to pass on details.

As he's extremely busy just running his business he needs to be able to make changes very easily, change text add pictures etc.

He doesn't want to be hassled with the details of editing HTML or uploading individual files to the correct location on the server. What he really needs is something that looks and feels like a browser where he can navigate between pages and edit them in a DTP sort of way (no HTML editing), then click a single button and have all the changed pages uploaded to the correct places.

It's also difficult to get through to him the importance of resizing images to the correct pixel dimensions, and of chosing a quality setting which keeps the byte-size down to a reasonable size. He therfore needs something which would allow him to take photos from his digital camera, crop them and then the software would automatically resize and optimise the image file based on the final size he choses for it on the web page.

Is there anything reasonably priced that would fit the bill?

Try 'Beework' (as in https://www.beework.co.uk) - they are very good and reasonably priced, and do a lot of websites for charity organisations etc. And no I don't work for them, but they did a website for me once and I was very impressed with both the design and the cost.
    Worth a look....

My partner is a web designer in his spare time (he is an IT lecturer as a day job). He recently done a job for £500..... other companies had quoted between £3000 and £5000!

Look out for the small local people doing it in their spare time, they are always cheaper and you get a more personal service. Local papers can be a good place to find them.... either that or PM me for my partners contact details!!

Sounds familiar.. I do stuff in my spare time as a student.. and it's the same for me.. someone will come up to me for a quote and for similar things they could have been quoted anything between £200 and £2000..

I am after a web design service, but am after some cool graphics as well. anyone available at a decent rate?? The site I want is really simple but I know nothing about web design, and don't want one of the run of the mill clone sites that some companies offer.

    Try

Apparently you post exactly what you want done, and then web designers put in bids, competing for the job.
You then chose the best offer.
If you do try either of the above, do let me know how you get on.

You might not need to pay much for an online shop.

I set one up for free (but I have to pay about £50/year for the Hosting) - see my Web Link in my MSE Member's Profile for the example shop. I say free, but I had to put in the learning curve and the time. It is a standard product, well supported and so far has performed reliably.

Computing knowledge is needed to install it, but once set up you can add/remove your own products and categories in a user-friendly way that is easier (and much cheaper) than managing an online Ebay shop.

Once you have your basic shop running, it can be tweaked/customized by a team of competent freelancers who can be contacted via a User Group. You can buy a reasonably cool 'skin' for your shop that installs like a breeze but keeps all the shop's functions.

You can have an intro Website as you mentioned, then link to your shop from there.

    Cheers

I can highly recommend www.1and1.co.uk to build and administer a website. It cost me just £1.99 per month and if I remember correctly, you can add a shop facility as well.

As somebody with very little time or IT knowledge I created our site in just 3 days, and I'm rather proud of it. Have a look.

Last year I paid over £700 for the creation and admin of our site believing it to be a skill too far for me. I would urge anybody to have a go with 1and1.

    Best of luck
    Tricia.
