Medium priority on the housing list - what does that really mean?

I checked my status with the local housing association and they said I am on the waiting list as medium priority. I am a month away from having to declare myself homeless, so I am a bit confused...

When you are homeless you will have more priority.

Every scheme is different, so it is hard to give general advice.

Some schemes only offer accommodation to people in the top priority; others offer a percentage of properties to people in the top priority, but a greater percentage to people in medium priorities.

You need to speak to them to understand how it works in your area, and if you need to be bidding for properties or widening your choices etc.

I’m a bit confused that you will be declaring yourself homeless – only the local council can decide if you are homeless or not (or they may have contracted this out to a housing association). This will look at a number of steps – are you eligible for housing – are you in a priority need group – have you done anything that has contributed to you losing your current accommodation. It may be that although you have no accommodation you may not be homeless by this definition.

If you are at risk of losing your home within the next month you should get in touch with the local council (or housing advice centre or shelter) and start looking at your options now. If you leave it too late and are expecting to be offered a council or HA property you may be disappointed.

    Good luck
