Over charged on gas and elec?

Hi,

Me and my fiancee were renting a 2 bed house on a 6 month lease and our gas and electricity bills came every 2 months our 1st 2 bills were around the £111 mark when we was moving out we phoned and told them thaty we were moving home and could we have the final bill ( the final bill was for 1 and a half months) they said that eon did not supply the gas etc at the new address and would send the final bill we got this and to our shock it was over double what we have ever paid £230 considering it was now warmer so we turned heating hours down or compleatly off so we was using less gas and we didnt cook much as we didnt want to mess the cooker after cleaning it before we moved so we used less electric how can this be justified?

I feel that they have bumped up the cost due to the fact the house was empty for a long time before we moved in and they feel this could happen again so have covered them selfs? what can i do to get this lowered as i am VERY reluctant to pay it.

Thank you,

Mike.

    Hi delaninho,

Did you advise E.ON of your start meter readings when you moved in along with your details and the correct date?

Was the first bill charged to accurate meter readings? or was this estimated?

If it was estimated it may be that the final bill is now a catch up bill, however, I would also check your start readings as well.

Our 1st bill was estimated then we phoned up with meter readings and the bill was lowered then for the final bill we told them it was our last and bam £230 phoned them up and questioned it they said nothing more can be done and it must be paid as we cant get into the property anymore to check the readings as we have now moved out

    Hi delaninho

So when you moved in did you give your start readings? and are these correct on your first bill.

Are the final readings on the final bill the same as the ones you provided?

If all of the readings are correct and the account has been billed to your readings, it does sound like the account has been billed accurately.

You can always contact E.ON to check the reads you have been billed from and to.

The final meter readings were not taken by our selfs they were taken by someone else and passed to us these could be wrong but now we no longer have access to the property and cannot check meter readings. as said i dont see how we can used £230 worth of gas and electric in 1 and a half months using less heating and less electric as we didnt cook for a few weeks leading to moving out then a 2 month bill is £111 when we had to live with rotted windows and a smashed window during the snow storms we had (the agents were not very professional) it doesnt make sense.

As the bill payer, you are responsible for taking initial and final meter readings and supplying these to the energy provider. It's possible you had several underestimated readings during your tenancy, so the last bill is playing catch up.
