    Hi don't if it helps , its not free but I recently did one of those text the reg ones it cost £3+two texts but it gave me lots of info like if a ins claim had ever been made on it, if the colour had ever been changed, whether it was stolen , and some more that ive now forgotten but did cover quite a bit. all I did was a google for text hpi and thats how I found it they tell you more info on their site,

    Car History Check by txt Msg or Debit Card (£3 UCR or £5 RAC)
    First we have the basic £3 txt message service as shown on the Used Car Roadshow website:[/i][/b]

    UCR-textcheck%20v5.gif

    This is one of the 2 messages you get back:

    <you car make & model>
    <vin bumber> date of manufacturer
    Amount of owners
    Colour changes
    Stolen?
    Scrapped?

    Second Message

    Record of <your reg> being subject to a total loss claim by insurers

    Second up is the Rac datacheck

    This requires a debit/credit car but looks quite a bit more detailed than the txt msg service and covers you upto £5000 if the data is wrong.

    there is also this website
    https://www.mycarcheck.com/
    but iv never used it so dont know how good it is, just browsing on the site it seems decent
