What size is your recycle bin?

(right-click on it, and select properties)

Is this a Vista (or shadow copy!?!) thing?
I'm on XP and the Windows folder is just over 5GB. The files within come to just 150MB less (nothing hidden, nothing in the R bin) but there are 170 files in 39 folders 'missing'.
Perhaps its the Windows equivalent of 'Lost Property' or 'down the back of the sofa' - there's just so many files to keep track of these days, you're bound to lose a few.

    Peculiar

    Inothing in the R bin

I didn't mean to check if there was anything in the recycle bin. Windows reserves space on your hard drive to store deleted files. If you had a 120 GB hard drive, and it was reserving 10% for the recycle bin, then it would be using up 12 GB of space (or thereabouts).

I've just shrunk the R bin reserve and the sizes are the same so the reserved space doesn't appear to be included in the Windows folder.
It wouldn't explain the difference in actual file and folder numbers anyway.
    What's missing?

Did you re-boot before checking the HDD levels? That might help...

Yep. No change. No change in total file sizes or space on disk.
The issue for me isn't so much one of space rather what the missing files and folders are.

If you right-click on the C drive and go to properties and then disk cleanup, are there any enormous files there?

Try downloading and running TreeSize Free.
Tells you lots about disk space usage. ;)
Only takes a couple of minutes for an entire hard disk.
