A friend who banks with Egg has just called me to say that someone has taken over 2k over the last week from various cash machines. She has the card.

She has rung egg and reported this. What are the chances of her getting this money back, considering money was taken from an atm. Is it actually possible for some form of cloned card to be used at a cash machine?
For everthing else there's mastercard.
For clampers there's Barclaycard.

Of course! A clone is in fact a replica so yes, they would be able to empty the account if the machine your friend last used was a skimmer.

Report to Egg, the police (who will check out if its a dodgy restaurant etc) and they should sort it. Slow and long process though, unfortunately.

So in the meantime will she have to pay for it or will it be suspended?, I didnt think it was possible to clone chip and pin cards (well the chip bit)

It is not possible to clone the chip, but the magnetic strip can be cloned. Most cash machines use the magnetic strip on the card rather than the chip, as far as I know.

the a/c should be suspended and investigated. If this is all the dosh she had (in emergencies) they should provide an interest bearing overdraft to see her through, in that I mean an o/d interest free if not her fault. Fee charged if it was or fraud committed.

so in this case it'd be interest free until the a/c gets sorted.

Agree with Elky - mag stipe usually gets cloned. this is what ATM's read.

The only way they could have cloned your card is if they were to actually hold your card, and physically swipe it through a card reader, which most of the time, will be connected to a computer so it can save the data.

They would then swipe a blank card twice through the device, and your data will be written to the new card. These people have some pretty clever ways of deceiving people to get their card for just a few seconds.

Not quite true - Check these out:

You could also have your card cloned at a 'Dodgy ATM'

In theory as long as she has had the card in her possession all the time, she should get her money back.

You may like to suggest the following to her.

    1. Keep a full record of who she has spoken to or written to.

    2. Report this to the Police and make sure she gets a Crime Reference Number or Incident Number. The reasons for doing this are: If there are other cases of 'cloning' in your friends area it just may alert the police. More importantly if her card issuer dispuptes these transactions. Your friend, and not Egg becomes the victim. It also proves to Egg that she is serious.

    3. Write to Egg and ask them how the crime was perpetrated. She would want to know in writing how and where her card was cloned and how the theif acquired her PIN. This is in order for your friend to take the appropriate steps to protect herself further. She may use the same PIN for all her cards. She may want to revert to Chip & Signature.

I presume it was a Credit Card and not a Debit Card?

I'd urge you to have a read of this excellent letter written by AngelaSinclair (Massive Chip and PIN Fraud).
