Thanks everyone, she already has quite a good diet, she doesn't eat meat and hasn't done for about a year, shes also stopped eating eggs, but she did love her eggs and did eat too many I think. I will have a look at those websites, really looking for alternative to those spreads, wonder if an everyday low fat spread would do the job the same as the expensive stuff??

Unless she needs to lose weight too, as long as the spread / marge is dairy free and doesn't contain hydrogenated veg oil, there should be no reason to use low fat spread, which IMHO taste awfull and have a really nasty texture in the mouth.Manufacturers usually proclaim on the packets these days 'no trans fats, no hydrogenated vegetable oil' etc.
Be carefull too as I find a lot of very low fat manufactured products have a lot of sugar and/ or artificial sweetener added. Plus other additives to keep it all together / stop it going off.

My OH has recently gone on cholesterol reducing diet so I know what a minefield it can be.

    Good luck, Alison.

when dr said my cholesterol was a bit high i must admit i didnt change my diet and thought it would still be high at next check but it was down and the only thing i did was to walk a steady four miles twice a week, i know everyone wont be able to do that but it helped me
  • If you want some cheese, try Les Kol-its available in most supermarkets.
Use an olive oil spread such as Olivio.

Cashew nuts can help reduce cholesterol levels, read here...

    http://72.14.203.104/search?q=cache:c4tpnN70GYwJ:www.whfoods.com/genpage.php%3Ftname%3Dfoodspice%26dbid%3D98+cashew+nuts+help+reduce+cholesterol&hl=en&gl=uk&ct=clnk&cd=2

Have also read this in several books too.

You could try making a nut butter out of cashews, and use sparingly.

Also, have a look at this link re liver cleansing diet.

  • Only browsed the page, but doesn't the hillbilly housewifes information on trans fats in marge contradict the latest research?

I was told by a dietitian that I should eat an apple a day, and also baked beans and other pulses are good. (I have had a stroke)
I usually cook meat so the fat runs off anyway.
Benecol? a con, just over priced stuff. Use less of the normal stuff or cut it out where possible.
BTW cholesterol is produced by the body and any food which says cholesterol free is just stating the obvious, and yet again more dodgy marketing.

I struggled for years on low-lipid diets trying to get my cholesterol down with very little success. Eventually my doctor decided I would have to go on a low dose of a :: Name removed. Internet searches seem to indicate this is still a prescribed only drug and therefore this may constitute medical advice which we do not encourage - FM :: , which I think is now an over the counter product. My cholesterol halved in a matter of weeks. Years of purgatory eating almost nothing but fruit, veg, white fish, cottage cheese, low fat this and low fat that to little effect and now I can eat a normal, I like to think healthy , diet again. The relief!

Pulses, oats and apples are all good ways of reducing cholesterol. They're easy to incorporate into a diet and fairly cheap too.
Morrisons low fat olive spread is as good as some of the 'special' spreads, which even my doctor admits "taste like ***t".
Personally I think these special foods are rubbish, if they really worked they'd be available on prescription instead of pills, and no-one would have high cholesterol.
