Hi
Hope this is ok to post, its a bit medical, but not asking for medical advice, just tips on mananging a low cholestrol diet economically.
My mum has a high cholestrol and is has been advised to buy *those* special products to replace of her normal butter, yoghurt etc. They are very expensive and as shes a pensioner, thought there might be a cheaper way to help reduce her cholestrol??

yes I would like to know as well. I have been told that my B.P. is up and to buy those special products would only make it worse I think as the price of them is enough to give me a heart attack. It's all very well the bright young thing at the surgery telling me to buy all this stuff but she doesn't say how I'm supposed to finace it0 -
Same here - I've been working hard at lowering my cholesterol all year but although it's come down a little bit (from 6.7 to 5.6) - my good cholesterol has gone down too.
I got a diet sheet from my doctor which lists the foods I should eat everyday and those I should avoid - I don't have any recipes though and it would be useful to have some as I cook from scratch. I also make my own yoghurt from semi-skimmed milk and don't particularly want to start buying expensive yoghurt drinks. I use Olivio spread.Enjoying an MSE OS life0 -

My cholesterol is a bit high.I had a test done in one of those vans outside Waitrose some months ago (cost about £5 I think) it is 5.9,which I was told was not dangerous but could do with coming down.
I read that foods that have soluable(sp?) fibre are cholesterol reducing,is that right? These include oats and pulses both of which are low cost and low fat.
I make my own yogurt out of semi-skimmed milk too Apple mint.Any idea how many points that i? Don't you find that WW don't make allowances for people who make their own ? I never know how many points there are in my hm bread either. This is what makes me give up all the time,it just seems so complicated. :mad:0 -
I have been on a low fat diet since my first heart attack in 1988.
Have never bought a "special" product in all of that time.
Eat your five pieces of fruit or veg a day,
drink skimmed (not semi) milk,
cut out crisps and biscuits completely,
cut the fat off bacon - and grill it
cut the fat off any meat - and grill it
cut out batter and anything fried, only eat oven chips if you must have chips
buy low fat spreads and yoghurts - we have found that Asda's very cheapest are the lowest in fat.
Check out the British Heart Foundation website for food hints.
My beloved's hobby is cooking and baking, she was in tears 18 years ago when faced with the above and more. Today we eat very well, very healthily and have almost forgotten about all those unhealthy things that raise cholesterol.0 -
The dietician at our local hospital, told us that to reduce your cholesterol using these 'special' products, you'd need to actually eat so much per day of the stuff that it would make you ill in other ways!!
Sensible eating is the way to go.

Thanks everyone, she already has quite a good diet, she doesn't eat meat and hasn't done for about a year, shes also stopped eating eggs, but she did love her eggs and did eat too many I think. I will have a look at those websites, really looking for alternative to those spreads, wonder if an everyday low fat spread would do the job the same as the expensive stuff??February Grocery Challenge £250.00
