Refund to same credit/debit card?

if i return something bought with a credit or debit card does the refund have to go on the exact same card?
What if you have closed that account?
or somebody else has purchased the item for you on their card?

Depends on why you are returning, but usually yes.

Some chains are more lenient like M&S from time to time that will allow a refund onto a different card, but Argos only refunds onto the same card (unless it has expired, receipt required) - Sports World only give value back in the form of a credit note/voucher. If you are returning for something other than a fault then effectively at the 'mercy' of the retailer!

The DSG rule is that it has to go back on the same card. If that is not available (e.g. expired) then another card of the same type will work. If the account has been closed, it can be refunded to the account, and the bank will then, in theory, get that to you (I don't know if this ever happens)
