hi there
im sorry but you are wrong bud. MS advise that as long as the correct key is entered for the correct version its ok. This method even features on the Microsoft Certified Desktop Support Technician (MCDST) exam.
i've used this way for years especially when people have lost their CD and only have the sticker on the case. i simply use an OEM CD. its the COA that counts and NOT the media with the idea of one licensed COA per machine.
Which in this case thats whats happening
regards
This is correct, and if it is a problem you just ring MS and explain that you needed to install a new HDD because the old one corrupted
Not that you will, because you have an XP/98 key and the activation/licensing checks are a little "less stringent" with those versions, shall we say?0 -

I was under the assumption that the E-Machine and the Laptop were two different machines, where the E-Machine had an OEM installation of Windows XP.
Have I misread the situation?0 -
Actually yeah, what work did he do on the laptop? Was it to re-install the OS?I was under the assumption that the E-Machine and the Laptop were two different machines, where the E-Machine had an OEM installation of Windows XP.

Yeah I thought it was 2 different machines too... and even if it did activate it would still be against the licence agreement right?0 -

If this is the case you are correct and the OEM from one machine cannot be used on the laptop for example!
Be careful with what you do have a copy of and what you don't FIFI, I suggest posting more information if you can!0 -

wouldnt matter if they were. the installation can still be done using the emachines or borrowed OEM CD as long as its done and activated on one machine

I didn't mean to implicate that using the media would be the problem as it wouldn't, but the COA/license attached to the E-Machine couldn't be used on the laptop.0 -

It wouldn't be being used in accordance with the terms of the license, so that'd be correct.0 -
Hi again chaps, soz it took me so long to get back and now I am totally confuzzled as I don't even know what an oem is or a coa!!!
I fink I will just try to get to PC world at the weekend....
I have a emachine PC and a HP laptop, the PC has vista ultimate on it which he put on here also and I suppose this will run out as well in a couple of days.
I did get to Bios and it did give me the options and I tried the nav keys to change it but it would not get passed PXE letters
I did also speak to emachines before when I wanted to put it on my laptop and they said it would be OK and gave me the codes to do this.
Trading Standards now have this guys details so he won't be doing it again, he showed me the disc etc with codes when he said he was putting it on for me and then they didn't materialise so yep he is getting product codes from his son who is working for MS in USA as he boasts a lot about it so I obviously thort genuine but it looks like his son is snaffling them, I did email MS but they wanted me to call premium rate numbers for me to explain it to them and sorry but I thought I would be doing them a favour and not have to pay to report him!!
Thanks again chaps for trying to help me but i really am a numpty and get frustrated when I can't do it!!! hence me paying him good money to sort probs out for me!!!
Typical rip off the kripple woman really!!! My own fault as i'm too trusting!0
