What sorts of things do you like to eat Cady?0

Go to a traditional butcher - there are still a few left - and ask him for advice. The kind of butcher I mean can tell you exactly where the meat he's selling has come from and therefore can tell you whether it's healthy or not. Or, find a farm shop. Some of these actually sell their own meat - it has to go to be slaughtered but then comes back and is hung for the correct length of time. I know of farms where you can actually see the animals grazing in the fields and you know that they haven't had over-use of chemicals, hormones etc. Have a look on the BigBarn website for what is available where you live:

He does free delivery if you order over £25, and everything we have bought has been good.0 -
Do you eat beef? If so then shin is usually good value, if you can find it, and stews up very well. Carbonnade de boeuf is a really '70's classic that is great. Think it is also known as Carbonnade a la Flamande - hairy bikers have done one - http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/database/lescarbonadesflamand_85456.shtml0

As you have a slow cooker you can use any cheap cuts of meat and they will turn out lovely!
The only cheap meat I wouldn't use is mince as it's not practical because too much water and fat content, so wait for special offers or reduced mince.

go in the evenings and buy the reduced meats? Eat cheap cuts? I got 10 pigs trotters last week of a rarebreed saddleback pig for £5, that'll do 10 meals.

Offal is always cheap too.0 -
Just thought I'd mention, offal is usually ok, but as you are pregnant you are supposed to avoid liver as it contains too much vitamin A.
It's only a game

mince is normally cheapish even for best quality....u can make alsorts with it....spag bol...chilli...burgers....savoury mince...good iron content that is useful when pregnant....i agree with chatting to a butcher (about meat of course;))onwards and upwards0

Hi Cady
I dont buy value meat either.
I do buy cheap cuts which is different. I fill the freezer with
1. Braising or stewing steak - great for casserole
2. Decent quality minced beef - shepherds pie, chilli, bolognaise ( the value range is usually full of fat)
3. Chicken thighs or drumsticks - much cheaper than chicken breasts, and can be used the same way
4. Bacon pieces - Mr S does them - good for quiche, etc
5. Lamb Shank, Oxtail etc - make really good stews - i dont have a slow cooker but these still turn out fine if cooked really slowly.
I also buy whoops good quality meat when i see it and use our local farm shop which gives a discount if you buy in bulk.
Good luck

Thanks for this - I don't live in PE area but it has given me an idea of butchers prices and they aren't anywhere near as expensive as I had thought.
Mr A can keep his offers and I shall go to my local farm shop or butcher from now on!
