Advice on making a claim

Hi I did have ppi insurance on my MBNA Credit Card untill I cancelled the insurance lastyear realising that it was a waste of money
I think I could have a good case to claim the payments back as when insurance was sold to me aprox 9 years ago I was on long term sickness after having a major heart operation and Im pretty sure I even mentioned it to the salesman on the phone that I was off work longterm sick and he carried on his sales pitch
Whats the best way to approach this should I try to claim myself using the templates or use a company to try to claim for me I dont have any past statements as I shred everything and now I use paperless statements online
Any pointers would help at this stage as I feel I've been ripped off and missold something that if I ever needed wouldnt be much good anyway
thanks
Simon

Please dont use a company, use the templates on here ,it seems you have a very good case.
Don't worry about having statements or trying to work out how much you are owed just send off your letter recorded delivery and we can take it from there.DS1 12/10/04

I would try to reclaim this yourself and not use a company. I note you say you cancelled this last year. Were you then aware that it was a complete waste of money? Did you have to give them reasons why you cancelled it? I am only asking this as they could perhaps say back to you that you should have complained then about it and may have proof of this although you most probably did not know that you could complain for this back.simongriggs wrote: »Hi I did have ppi insurance on my MBNA Credit Card untill I cancelled the insurance lastyear realising that it was a waste of money

I would just send your own letter from the template with things applicable to your own complaint and you then give them 8 weeks for a full and final response (don't forget to send everything recorded delivery). If they do not uphold this and you only just became aware of this misselling then the FOS may be able to overule the fact this was over 6 years ago it was applied to your card. You do however have a good case as you were in fact off work sick at the time.
Good luck0 -
Thanks for a quick reply Im going to get to work send off the letter and fingers crossed I'll be sucessful0

I have just noticed this on something that pinknico posted on the PPI discussion thread.
The continuing rise in the number of complaints referred to the ombudsman service by claims-management companies – increasing annually from 19% to 26% of all cases – reflects the substantial increase in complaints about payment-protection insurance (PPI) during the year. 14% of cases brought by claims-management companies in the 2007/08 financial year related to PPI complaints – but this number has now risen to over 50%.
A high proportion of the complaints we received about credit cards were also brought by claims-management companies on behalf of consumers.
Six claims-management companies accounted for over half of all the cases we handled during the year where consumers were represented by commercial third-parties.
We continue to tell consumers that we do not think they should need the help of a commercial third-party – such as a claims-management company or solicitor – to bring a complaint to us. We decide cases by looking at the facts – not at how well the arguments are presented. We prefer to hear from consumers in their own words.
And we are a free service for consumers – while commercial organisations charge consumers to bring a complaint on their behalf.
