Choosing seats on a long haul flight - internet booking?

We're thinking about booking a long haul trip and are pricing flights with either Air Canada or Virgin.
If we book the flights through a site such as Ebookers can we choose our seats when we book? I think we were able to do this through Expedia before but I can't remember. This time Ebookers are coming up cheapest and, without going through the booking process, I cant seem to find out.
I don't want to book with them, have seats automatically allocated and end up stuck beside the toilets - which isn't much fun on a 10 hour flight!

I booked long haul flights with Net Flights. I tried to enter the reference on the email confirmation on United's website, but it wouldn't accept it so I called United.
A very nice gentleman just asked for the flight details and gave me the correct locator reference which I was then able to use to select our seats.0 -
Yes.
Use your booking reference which you get and then go to Virgin's website and to 'manage my booking' where you can choose meals, seats etc0 -
I have booked flights on Air Canada with Ebookers and had to call Air Canada to book the seats, wouldn't allow me to do it on Air Canada site, but no problem booking them on the phone.0

We booked a flight with Continental but will be on a Virgin flight. I was unable to use the manage my booking on Virgin or Continental to reserve seats so I phoned Continental who tried to do it for me but couldn't, she was able to give me another code that enabled me go into the Virgin system to choose seats on the Virgin flight.0

Try booking direct on the airlines website. Price might be better and you may have a seat plan to pick from. I know American airlines do an online pick your seat during the booking.0
