Im trying to decode a movie and convert it for my ipod but when i run it through handbrake (which i did get working) the fan is loud and i checked the cpu usage is up running at 97-100% so i cancelled it as I dont want to blow up the pc
but i have no idea as to why this is happening and its not only whilst using handbrake sometime when im playing bejewelled it reaches 97%.
Can anyone please advise what could be the problem as i havent a clue where to look and presummed this pc could handle decoding - dell vostro 400 - intel core 2 duo 2.20 ghz with 3 gb ram.
Thanks in advance.

Media encoding/conversion is naturally CPU intensive.
A close to 100% CPU usage is to be expected and as long as you cooling is sufficient and not compromised the PC should cope with it just fine.
I've left PC's encoding for hours with a maxed out CPU.
And when running some scientific simulation software I have had a older Dell machine running a batch file maxed out like that for over a week.Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB

Probably was.Knowing the budget conciousness of the Uni IT department that is.
But the PC was bought for that purpose and I didn't pay for it.
It survived having that done fairly often for 3/4 years at least, so it did very well.Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB

hi there
help you cpu the easiest way by adding more RAM

If you read the OP, it's a Core2Duo 2.2GHz with 3Gb RAM. Adding more won't make the slightest bit of difference, as it won't be able to address more than that anyway.Ubuntu is an ancient African word, meaning: 'I can't configure Debian'.0

My Laptop sometimes runs at 90-100% even when I'm not running much. I'd always thought it was because I hadn't ran a spyware/virus checker for a while.Instigated terrorism the road to dictatorship.0
