One thing to bear in mind is that IF the vendors will not negotiate on price and the property goes back onto the market then any further purchasers will come up against the same problem. The vendors may be better off (and save more time and stress) by either getting the roof sorted now or reducing the price. My home is usually the House Buying, Renting and Selling Forum where I can be found trying to (sometimes unsucessfully) prove that not all Estate Agents are crooks. With 20 years experience of Sales/Lettings and having bought and sold many of my own properties I've usually got something to say

Many properties have asbestos in them somewhere and it is just whether you want the property badly enough that you feel it is worth spending the extra to get the asbestos sorted. The house we're buying has asbestos in garage roof but not in need of immediate attention. We love the house so we're still going for it.
This happened to my buyers, the survey that was done on their property revealed possible asbestos somewhere and their buyer kept thinking about it rather than doing something about it and on the day before exchange day pulled out, causing the rest of us in the chain much heartache.
Good luck with negotiations.0 -
Unless something has changed in the last few months , if it is an asbestos garage roof (the corregated type) then its not much of an issue as it can be disposed of by yourself at many council waste sites. This will vary from council to council - this has come up time and time before on MSE (so a bit of searching may find you an answer).
Remember most surveryors cove their backsides and many things can be taken with a pinch of salt as to how long they will actually last!0
