Hi does anyone know if most credit card companys have a limit on a purchase before they would contact the card holder for authorisation ?

I don't know about most, but I bought a freezer and a tumble dryer online and my cc company (i have a clydesdale bank mastercard) called me about 2 seconds after I'd done it to make sure it was me.
I had, had my card cloned before though.0 -
They track 'unusual' spending patterns rather than just large amounts. If you are a regular big spender then no, but if you spend small amounts and then bang through large amounts they may give you a call.I'm going for my QuidCo £million!
Total So Far: £9923.580 -
Just give them a call in advance, tell them you'll be spending 12k at "Uncle Penybag's Motors" and then when the transaction goes through they'll have your authorisation on the notes0

Numberof factors influence this, is it Chip or PIN or Card not present?
What category it comes under Jewellery, Electronics etc etc.0 -
If I go on holiday (particular cruises where you might be visiting many countries) then I call my card company to let them know when and where I'm going so they have it in their notes.
I'd rather do this than try to use the satelite phone on the ship at £10 per minute (and mobiles don't always work at sea).
Despite the cost it could cause a lot of worry and disruption to a holiday.
The secrets of their fraud monitoring systems are secret (becuase of they weren't some crook would get round them) so you won't get a straight answer.
But if you don't want disruption then jsut call them.0 -
We don't turn our systems off because someone notifies us they are going on holiday. However if the spends do flag up, we are more likely to may0

Sorry guys maybe didnt word this query quiet correctly .
Would a single transaction of 5k on a card not used for some time justify a phone call to the card holder to ask for authorisation on a transaction
?

I have on 2 occasions in the past paid for nearly new cars on my credit card.
On both occasions the transaction went through with no problems, to my surprise to be honest!
My parents, once had to call the card issuer whilst on a big shopping spree to confirm it was them who had in the course of 2 hours bought an expensive set of garden furniture, 3 new suits, a canteen of cutlery and a set of crystal glasses (outlet villages are wonderful places). It was a case of a few simple questions then their purchase was allowed to proceed.
I for one would be quite happy to answer said questions if I thought it might be preventing me being a victim of fraud.0
