Council are putting a street light outside my house I want to object

I got home last night to find the council have sprayed markings for a new lamp post right at the top of my drive.

There was also a letter from the councils sub contractors to say they were putting new lights all on my street.

My gripe is the exsisting lamp is 20 yards from my house, this one is being taken up, why do they not just put the lamp post back there or near it.

I do not want a lamp post outside my drives gatepost it will look stupid.

What can I do to ask them to put the post elsewhere?

  • Although this is the Council I would ask them if they have sought "planning permission" to move it in the first place!

Just phone up the streetlighting department of the council and ask to speak to someone. Explain the issue and ask if they can meet you at your house to show them your problem. The're much more likely to sort it before the light is fitted. Just be reasonable and see what happens, they're just normal people. If you get no joy speak to your councillor and ask him to approach the head of the department, usually environment and infrastructure. Good luck.

We had this happen to us, but we live in a street of terraced houses. The council moved the lamp post from the side of the road ,then attached it to a pole, from the wall next door , a couple of feet from our bedroom window. We objected on the grounds that someone could climb up and get into our bedroom during the night etc. They moved the pole and attached the lamp to the wall instead, told the neighbours that if they ever wanted to do any work on the brickwork to get in touch and they`d move it while it went on.

Providing it's not so close to your house that it's going to keep you awake at night, it's worth bearing in mind that a street lamp outside your house brings a definite security benefit at no cost to you! For obvious reasons houses with street lamps outside are burgled much less than those away from street lights.
Just because somebody is certain doesn't mean they are right!

True, but depending on the location of the house "hoodies" might want to congregate around the lamp post at night.

Can you not ask the council to attached the new lamp post to the existing underground connections of the old lamp post?

I had a similar problem with a proposed telegraph pole. Got on to BT and much to my amazement the relocated it without any fuss at all. Well worth having a talk with the council I would have thought.
