Car Jack

Hullo
My husband owns a Mitsubishi Pajero, and wants to get a decent jack for it.
It's his birthday in August, so am hoping to surprise him with one.
He spotted a lovely one in Costco last week for just under £200, but as it was 'only' 1.8 tonne, declared it wasn't good enough for his car.
Can anyone recommend something that might take the weight of his car?
Thank you!!

A 2 ton jack from Argos is £25. Thats probably not got the weight capabilities either though, just trying to say theres no need to pay nearly £200 for a jack.
This'll do the trick, http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEW-SEALEY-3003CXQ-3-TON-ROCKET-LIFT-TROLLEY-JACK_W0QQitemZ300317966704QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Lifting_Moving_Equipment?hash=item45ec588170&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1689%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318%7C301%3A1%7C293%3A1%7C294%3A50
Failing that, theres 4 ton ones on ebay for £18 delivered.0 -
i can't post attachments as i dont post often. but go to ebay and type in high lift jack. a 3 ton one is about £50, i had one when i had my pajero, they are great0

I have one of http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/ctj3000ql-3-tonne-quick-lift-trolley-j/path/trolley-jacks-bottle-jacks-transmission-jacks Argos used to sell them slightly cheaper but I just checked their site and can't find them any more. I think it is probably the best balance of price, features, lift height and so on available. It can lift 3 wheels into the air on my car (not a 4x4), which is probably something I shouldn't know, lol. You can also get something like http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/ctj3qlg-3-t-quick-lift-pro-trolley-jac/path/trolley-jacks-bottle-jacks-transmission-jacks which is more the sort of jack you'd keep in a garage (it is too heavy to carry around and as you can see has no carrying handle so it's just intended to be wheeled about in a garage - you will probably even find the first one I posted a little heavy to carry but this is about twice the weight).
Don't forget safety first and get him a pair of axle stands http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/cax-3tbc-3-ton-axle-stands/path/axle-stands-car-ramps-2 and maybe some wheel chocks too http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10151&storeId=10001&partNumber=500900&langId=-1&cm_mmc=Googlebase-_-Workshop%20&%20Tools/Workshop%20Equipment-_-Na-_-Halfords%20Plastic%20Wheel%20Chocks&%24%24tid=RQZdsLwecK9F5CadDOTW9w0mAtMnKes-vQGHNuXPm1R2ycsNvOlgz3wvLdBr2tv-0 -
Our motor factor had some aluminium full sized ones a while ago, they were very light and easy to carry.
From memory they were £150-200 rather than the £50 the equivalent (very heavy) steel ones cost0 -

I'd second Machine Mart too, good range of effective jacks at good prices. As said get something recommended for high lift 4x4 vehicles, but don't forget the max swl is the max weight capable of being carried by the jack. When would all 4 wheels be jacked up at the same time on 1 jack

I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)
Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed0 -
Don't buy him a hi-lift/'farm style jack unless he specifically wants one. They're great for off road recovery but usesless for workhsop use and potentially lethal.
Is he just after a trolly jack? If so go to Machine Mart and get one of theirs. A standard 2 tonne jack should be fine. I use one with a Land Rover and it's no problem at all. I think mine is the one that is described as a 2 tonne DIY jack at Machine Mart. As cyclonebri1 said the jack doesn't have to lift the whole weight of the vehicle, just a small percentage.
As well as the jack get him some good axle stnads and wheel chocks. It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends

WHat you need to think of is the 4x4 will already be some height off the ground many of the 2 tonne jacks will be at the end of thier reach before they even connect with the floor plan, If i was you I would take him to machine mart to look at the jacks let him make the choice and you pay that way he gets the jack he wants and you get the satisfaction that your not going to be buying him the wrong thing :-) I would expect you need to get a 3 tonne garage trolly jack to be honest.
Like this one http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/ctj3000g-3-tonne-professional-garage-j/path/trolley-jacks-bottle-jacks-transmission-jacksIf it doesnt pay rent sell it.

You really don't need a professional quality 3 tonne jack for occassional DIY use. Also a 2 tonne jack won't be at the end of it's reach. The one at machine mart that's £22 has a maximum height of 15 inches, under the axles of a 4x4 the height will be 8-10 inches so it will still lift it off the floor. Also because you have so much clearance anyway you don't need to lift them much to work on them.
I do most things on mine without jacking it up. I only jack it up if I need to get a wheel off. It's my problem, it's my problem
