Installing free anti virus to laptop

Options
I am going to buy an EI Systems 2513 laptop from Currys with no anti-virus installed on it. I could pay an extra £30 to get one which has Norton on it, but I want to save the £30 and install either AVG or Avast, which I intend to download from CNET.

Will I be OK connecting to the net to do this (without any anti-virus running) whilst I am downloading either of the above?

And does anyone have any advice as to which of the above I should install.

Thanks.

I'd imagine you'd be fine. If I were you I'd download the AV, burn it to a CD then install it.

Alternatively, connect to your router using an ethernet cable with your Windows inbuilt firewall on and I'm sure you'll be fine.

Personally I'd use Avira AntiVir. Avast would be my second choice and I'd rather have a virus than AVG!

Download Avast or AVIRA (I use Avira personally)
AVG is a bit of a let down these days

Nice choice on the Ei System! I have one, running for 3 years and no probs yet touch wood!

By the way, you will get some sort of trial antivirus (probably Norton) so you will have to remove that properly first otherwise you'll cause all-sorts of problems. You will be fine connecting to the net, I can only reitarate what davidmt83 said.

Thanks everyone. I have downloaded Avira and copied it onto a flash drive. It took me a while to figure out how to do that as I have never used it before. Just need to get the laptop now.

    Thanks for all you advice.
