I was told today that it is possible to apply for DLA and still carry on working - how can that be? Surely if someone is in need of care or help to get around, how can they work?
Please don't shoot me down - I have been turned down for DLA soooo many times despite having Lupus. I am working at the moment (16 hours) but struggling as my condition varies greatly. Since going back to work I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia. I am in constant pain again and have had my meds increased. I love my job but can't cope sometimes.
Is it possible to get some help without having to give up my job?

Yes you can get DLA whilst working, but it's not about the condition you have, it's the symptoms and problems you encounter because of it, write down everything, they know nothing about you, and assume they know nothing about your condition either. CAB should be able to help and advise you on what to do next. Good luck!0

Your care needs can increase by working.
You can work and claim DLA but your employment cant be at odds with why you are claiming DLA, for example if you get HRMC you cant have a job that requires you to walk all day.0 -
A young man who I know is a wheelchair user; he has spina bifida and needs plenty of help, both with care and mobility. He gets DLA (I dont know what rate).
However, this does not stop him working full-time as a Receptionist. Just because his legs dont work and he needs help because of that, doesnt mean he cant work at something involving his arms and brain!(AKA HRH_MUngo)

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton0 -
I get DLA for a problem with my wrist, I can't lift or carry or write but I can work part-time and my workplace has adapted slightly for me.
OP, have you looked into Working Tax Credits? It sounds like you're limited to part-time working due to your condition, it may help financially. No longer using this account for new posts from 20130 -
Hi! Having trouble posting a reply but thankyou for all your responses! Going to reapply - can't carry on like this. Spoke to my GP who is aware of how much I rely on help from friends and my children when its bad. He seems quite supportive. . . . .One life.0

DLA is non-means tested and is really a recognition of the way disabilities cost money! It's independant of your earnings situation in every way. I understand the difficulties in getting it, but you can only keep applying. Fill in the forms honestly, to reflect a "bad day" for you and good luck.0
