stone fell out of engagement ring

Hi,

Ive just realise that the diamond has fallen out my engagment ring. Because I ve only got standard contents cover its not covered by house insurance. I have the receipt from 2000 - would the jeweller accept any liability ?

Thanks in advance

Sadly I think you will be time barred. Did you have it serviced more recently?

You want a jeweller to accept liability for a diamond falling out of a ring you got nine years ago?

I'm sorry but that isn't going to happen.

Even under UK law, six years is all the time that the jeweller could theoretically be partially laible for, however you would be hard pressed to satisfy a court that you hadn't knocked or scraped it against anything in that period of time!!

Are you SURE that your home contents insurance doesn't cover it?
    British Ex-pat in British Columbia!
  • called the insurance company - they said its not covered if you only have a standard policy .

    thanks anyway
  • ernst and jones offer a 10 year diamond guarantee if you bought if from them.
Isn't the knowledge that comes from experience more valuable than the knowledge that doesn't?

Good point. Consider if there are any extra-statutory guarantees. However they would have had to have been in place at the time of purchase.

If there was a guarantee in place at time of purchase, i'm sure it would contain conditions that you would have to have the diamond checked at least once a year.

Unless this was the case and you have had the diamond 'checked', 'serviced' every year i don't think you have any chance of claiming liability from the jeweller.

I'm afraid i think you will have to cover the costs of the repair/replacement yourself.
