digicam to dvd problems

Hope some one can help on this.
I have a number of hours of recording from a sony digital camcorder (2 years old think it is a TVR-33 or similar) which plays perfect when connected direct to the TV. The problem is when i transfer to PC and then try and burn to DVD. The quality of the file that plays on the PC is poor and it is also the same as what get burnt to DVD. I assume that my problem is the transfer from Cam to PC but no idea what it is.
I am using firewire and have tried a number of different types of software but all have the same problem. Am i missing a set up on the cam? to download effectively.
