Winpc Defender?

Every couple of minutes I get pop-ups for Winpc Defender on my computer. We have never had this installed on our computer and it keeps telling us that we have lots of serious viruses but Norton is running normally for us and detects no problems. Is this a scam to frighten us to buy extra protection?

I'm pretty sure that that actually *is* a virus.. It was on my daughter's laptop last week and was a b*gger to get off. Sorry.
The Techie board will be more help.

    OP:

    It's scumware, from scum.

There's a specific cleansing routine for it.

And it just goes to prove how "great" Norton is :D
If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

Always amazes me why anyone has Norton on their machine, whether they're hooked into a subscription or not. It was great when Peter Norton first developed it but that's long ago and Peter's long gone.

But then, times change, so I'm amazed now when I find people still banging on in this era of Comodo and Avira about ZoneAlarm and AVG freeware.

    * PS: I have no connection at all with this site, which I generally find to be an utter waste of time, but today's time-limited free offer is spectacularly good:

If anyone is still relying on ZoneAlarm, then there's no excuse.

norton/mcafee are both worse than useless. AVG isn't that much better anyway.

i'm sure the techies in the techie board will be able to help clean out the infection.

OP: do NOT use malwarebytes or any other application to clear this infection other than via the specific routine provided in the link at post #4.

It's easy enough to follow, the website is long established and authoritative, and there's no need to ask tecchies on here or resort to attempting a clean-up with whatever softare you may or may not have to hand.
