Modem problem - help please!

I'm at my wits end - I've got a Dell basic desktop computer that I've had for 3 years with no problesms. Just recently it won't join the internet and tells me that it can't 'find' the modem. The modems built into the computer. I've been on the phone to AOL and they've taken me through the whole procedure but they can't see why it won't work.

Some people tell me to go Broadband but I don't think it's financially viable for 2 reasons:

1 - I have an NTL line and most Broadband companies need a BT line.
2 - I work for a Time Warner company which is part of AOL and we get the basic dial-up free.

How can I fix this without spending an arm and a leg?

OK - first things first. Go into your device manager (My Computer, right click, properties / hardware / device manager). Click the plus sign next to 'Modems' and see if anything is listed - also, if there is a yellow question mark against it.
