    Hi,

I don't know of any reason why you should not do this, except that some flooring retailers tend to 'spit the dummy' and attempt to charge you a premium if you are using your own ancillaries...

A way around this is to tell the retailer you are using your existing underlay, and request the fitter to put your internet-bought products down for you as an extra job independent of the carpet shop....

Regarding quality of product: The internet shops buy exactly the same products as the shops (sometimes the shops have them rebranded to put the customer of the scent), but are much more expensive as they want to make more profit out of them.

My other advice would be to shop around on the internet......put CARPET UNDERLAY into google, and you should find an array of respectable underlay selling websites!

Ok, so it seems that the local large retailers (I bought from Carpetright, but got almost identical quotes at General George and Behar) make quite a killing on the underlay and gripper (and, indeed, delivery - although when I queried this I was told that it relates to delivery from factory to store, not from store to house...)

-GENERAL GEORGE are the old name for the Scottish arm of ALLIED CARPETS, so they're bound to be a little pricey. BEHAR are a Scottish-based multiple retailer.

If you had visited a competely independent retailer, there is a good chance you will deal with one of the proprietors of the business, making gaining a better deal easier. If you buy from a multiple, they will have to stick to some sort of minimum price guideline, or they will get wrong off head office!

Regarding your delivery charges: Believe me, this is a lame excuse to simply lump more charges onto your bill. If the product is being delivered only and fitted by yourself, then fair enough, but unless your carpet has had to be specially manufactured for your particular needs, there should be NO delivery charge on top of a fitting charge. The majority of carpets that Carpetright sell are stocked in full roll form in their warehouses, ready for orders to be cut from them.

Do you honestly expect them to be charging THEMSELVES to transport goods from one warehouse to another? I think not! The extortionate accessory prices, along with the actual fitting charge should cover transport costs!

Is there any problem with using existing gripper rods? My hall has concrete floors and to rip up existing rods and replace with new ones will make a mess of the floor.

For anyone in London, I used this guy:

    http://www.ufloor.me.uk/

He is really good, honest and very cheap! He came round my house with samples then I booked him in for two weeks later.

    I paid £140 for 100% berber wool carpet for a 4.5 x 3.5m room inc fitting and 9mm underlay.
