After a four year closure, a new and much improved Band on the Wall is set to reopen in September. And on 5 June, they're staging a special fundraiser concert at The Lowry starring Terry Callier – the legendary singer-songwriter who has enjoyed a resurgence in recent years after collaborating with Beth Orton, Nitin Sawhney, and most recently, Massive Attack.
Callier grew up in Chicago, Illinois and was a childhood friend of Curtis Mayfield. He retired from music in 1983 but re-emerged in the 1990s when British DJs began playing his songs in clubs. Described by Paul Weller as having a “beautiful, crystalline voice”, Callier is celebrating 45 years in the music business and will be performing tracks from his new album Hidden Conversations, featuring Massive Attack.
Mike Chadwick, music programmer at Band on the Wall, says: “With a career spanning five decades and a back catalogue of 16 albums, Callier is a true legend. This a rare chance to see him perform live and it offers a taste of what's to come at Band on the Wall later in the year.”

Band On The Wall was a cornerstone of Manchester's music scene for the greater part of the last century – its reopening is excellent news for the city's gig-goers. In the past it's played host to bands such as Joy Division, The Fall, Buzzcocks, Bjork, John Martyn and loads of other respected names. It reopens in September 2009 with state-of-the-art facilities and a new multi-use space, The Picturehouse.
