    hi there

looks like a bad driver or something causing a stop error

now you have 2 options here

    1. debug the stop error and identify the item causing the problem or
    2. wipe the system with your recovery media but there is no guarantee that the problem won't repeat itself if its something your plugging in
so i'd go for the debugging method

    heres how:

    • download and install windows debugging tools
    • set your system up to record mini dump files
    • run the debug tool and look for "image name"
    • the item in "image name" is what's crashing your pc
this process looks and sound complicated but it isnt really and helps pin point your system faults easily. if you need help with it just ask.

once i have more posts and can post links / images i will write a step to step guide on this

    regards

    Hi all,

Firstly I pressed ctrl + alt + delete etc. but it said that such a file did not exist?

Then I rebooted the laptop and pressed F8 as instructed, 'safe mode with networking' etc. and it stated 'A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

    BAD_POOL_CALLER

    ?? ??

ok, well ctrl + alt +delete should have brought up taskmanager and it didnt, so that would be a registry problem or the file for some reason has been deleted. look for taskmgr.exe in c:\windows\system32 if its there then its a registry problem
Before restoring i would recommend you copy all your downloaded, music, personal files to an external device, boot from a cd like hirens boot cd (freeware) and use the minixp / mini98 to copy the files via the usb or if your unable to do that. ask a friend to connect your hard drive if its sata to their pc and copy your file over. and then use the recovery after putting it back in your laptop.
sata 2.5in is the same connection as a 3.5in sata
whilst the drive is connect to your friend get them to run a spyware / antivirus scan on your drive, just to see if you have any.

removal of harddrive depends on make, usually to remove the hard drive its 2 screws and then slid the disk out, other dells require removing around 6screws. depends on the plate thats used. Shouldn't take more than 5 minutes to remove the drive.

Hi andy, sorry it did bring up the taskmanager but it couldn't find the explorer.exe file.

    Sorry to confuse.

I have actually got all my important files backed up on an external hd so I am quite happy to reinstall my windows xp software but my installation cd won't boot up.

Yes I did do that and a message appeared stating that that file didn't exist.
