Acer Aspire Laptop - CD Drive Problem?

Hi All

I wondered if any of your helpful lot could suggest a solution for my problem. When I put in Software I hear the drive revving/spinning but nothing ever comes up?

It is causing a bit of an issue as I need to put some software on for a new printer.

My local shop quoted between £70 and £150 for a new drive but they also said it might be a driver issue? They said to take it in for them to look.

Any advice appreciated.

Many thanks.

Can you explore the contents of the disc through My Computer?

hi sound like it a common problem the way to fit it you need to edit the registry so if you are not happy to do this i would advise geting someone who know what they are doing if you are you need to remove a thing called upper filter and lower filters

Removing the filters are for when the drive is not recognised at all.

Waiting for the answers to the questions posed in post #5.

No I can't as I answered to someone else.
Yes, I have tried many different CDs,

As I said I can hear the drive working but nothing ever comes up and it's not displayed in My Computer either.

    Many thanks,

The price you were quoted is silly. The drive costs maybe £20 if it is just an old CD drive. DVD drive say £40 max. Fitting is a 20 minute job. Say £30. The max you should be paying is £70-not £70-£150. They know the cost of the drive and they know the labour involved, so they should be able to give you a firm price. Go somewhere else, or change if yourself.

Thanks, I am trying this now. Actually it worked fine when I had XP, worked when I upgraded to Vista but then my laptop messed up so had to re-install Vista, I think it stopped working after the re-install.

I'll let you know the outcome.

    Fingers crossed.
