Problems with opening GMail messages

I've been having problems the last few weeks where often I am unable to open GMail messages.
I am sometimes able to open messages once but then not again within the same session - I may have to log out and log back in again.
When I click on the email I want to open, it does not open the message. Instead it shows the hourglass for a few seconds and then reverts back to the usual mouse pointer, without opening the message at all.
I've had this problem on different machines and using different browsers (IE, Opera etc).
Does anyone else have this problem? It's very annoying!
