what happens if you do what i suggested in my 1st post in the thread? ... does this help?
    Yes, thanks.

I had noticed that after I had mounted the device and selected the iso file, Windows Explorer in the Guest shows the dvd drive as having Virtualbox Guest Additions, so I double-clicked and ran the x86 exe as you advised.

The processing looks fine now, expect for the file sharing. I used Devices> Shared Folders, and shared a folder from the Host, but as yet cannot see it in Windows Explorer in the Guest (where it's supposed to appear under My Networking Places> Entire Network> VirtualBox Shared Folders).

Apart from that, Windows 7 seems to be running ok under Virtualbox, so I will start installing Office and some other applications (including the anti-virus about which Windows 7 has sent me an Important Message!)

Many thanks to yourself and the other posters for your invaluable help.

if i remember rightly, when i enabled the shared folders from the device menu i created a folder on my desktop (on the host) and put the files in that folder.

then on the VM (guest), i clicked start > run (or windows key + r if run doesn't appear in the start menu) and typed \\vboxsvr\ into the run box and pressed ok to get the shared files onto the VM

    HTH :)

\\vboxsvr and \\vboxsrv don't work on this installation: 'Windows cannot access \\xboxsrv\'

I tried plugging in a usb drive, which does show up in Devices> USB Devices> Sandisk U3 Cruzer Micro, but selecting that device fails with 'USB device ... is busy with a previous request. Please try again later.'

Also, Windows 7 Explorer does not show Network Neighborhood, which is where the Virtualbox User Manual says the shared folder is supposed to show.

Just to inform the people who posted advice, I re-ran the whole installation of Virtualbox Guest Additions, instead of just the x86 exe as I did before, and now USB devices work within the VM, so I can use USB drives and maybe an external hard drive for passing files between the Host and Guest machines.

The issue of sharing folders is still outstanding but is much less urgent now.

Thanks again to all who contributed.

Go back to basics. Launch a command windows and enter the following (substituting the desired drive letter and correct share name)
    net use Z: \\vboxsvr\sharename

i forgot to mention that you need to right click on the folder icon in the bottom right of the Win7 VM's window (its where the network activity/usb devices/hard drive/cdrom indicators are) and select a folder that you want to share with the VM.

say you create a folder named share on the desktop of the host, you then do what i said above and type that path of the share folder into folder path (ie. C:\Users\User\Desktop\share). type share into the folder name (in virtualbox), check make permanent and press ok. now try entering \\vboxsvr\share into the run box & should bring up the shared folder
