Look on the bright side, surely one of the great things about being your own boss is you can deal with time wasters the way you want. Obviously as you mentioned it is best not to swear but it is so nice to be able to show them the door instead of working for a large company where they ramble on about reporting you to head office, Watchdog, the local papers and anyone else they can think of! The look on some peoples faces when they finally realise they aren't going to be pandered to is priceless :)

BTW on the subject of being reported it could be worse...when I worked in catering someone almost weekly would say they would report us to environmental health as a threat if they didn't like the way we did something. EH always gave us top marks so we couldn't give a toss and I'm not sure they are there to discuss customer service issues anyway :)

A few years ago i was working for a well known retailer. Problem was one of the managers was a Basil Fawlty character and would get wound up by any kind of question from a customer that had a very easy answer. If i got a penny for everytime he told a customer to 'smeg off' and they 'shouldnt even be in the store if they dont know where something was' or 'the price is there RIGHT THERE! WHY ARE YOU ASKING ME IVE GOT BETTER THINGS TO DO!!!', id be a millionnaire :rotfl:

Everyone here is on your side. Timewasters and energy vampires are a real pain, and they go on and on until something snaps - then they have 'won'. What a loser that person must be.

With hindsight, perhaps you could have stopped responding much earlier, when you realised what you were dealing with.

A competitor? Not sure about that, a real on the level rival would have just taken the information and run I think.

Absolutely, agree with the comment re being able to show unpleasant customers the door. We have been dealing on and off with an extremely difficult, unpleasant woman, whose manner intimidates the staff and we began to feel could potentially try and cause some serious hassle in the future if she wanted to.
I always go out of my way to accomodate all customers, but the last time this woman rang to order and starting ranting off again, it was the sweetest moment for me to say to her ever so nicely, "Look, you don't seem to have any confidence in us here and I don't think we're ever going to please you, so I really do think it would be better if you took your custom elsewhere."

You'll get all sorts of customer through the door. I run a pretty busy website and most customers might ask a question and then buy but you will get people sniffing for info perhaps a competitor or a wannabe bedroom affiliate trying to scam you.

Had an Indian bloke doing the exact same thing asking lots of questions. Low and behold i find my entire site copied on another domain..... guess where the address was registered to? India! Needless to say Google took it down pronto.

People will always want a slice of your pie if your doing well and will always focus on the doing well/money aspect never the hard work that went in along the way  Just tell them all to (insert swear word here) and go away :rotfl:

LOL, you are well rid. I would like to say good for you and not to worry about it. I wish I could do the same with some of my customers who go on and on.

I am however intrigued - how long will this mascara last on my eyelashes if its sunny where I am? Seriously. What answer did you give to that??

I can understand the OP's frustration. I would have been putting the phone down on them a long, long time ago and blaming BT for the disconnection.

Yes you could be done for section 5 of the public order act if the person says your swearing caused him or her alarm or distress:rolleyes:
except that no offence is committed where the words or behaviour are used, or the writing, sign or other visible representation is displayed, by a person inside a dwelling and the other person is also inside that or another dwelling.

Probably safe in this instance then. However, does that mean that if you were indoors, and swore over the phone at someone who was outdoors, that you might be committing an offence?
