best amex for young person due to emigrate...

Options
firstly, Hello all, thank you in advance for the advice, I signed up to the email a couple of years ago and regularly search the forums for advice but have never needed to post before.

i'm due to emigrate, have a green card and re-entry permit sorted. i want to apply for an amex card as in theory i can then, hopefully, transfer this to a US account fairly easily...

i have a student loan of approx. £10k plus an overdraft of £1k. i've had a look at the cards on offer, didn't realise there were quite so many! boyfriend says i should get the best APR but i am quite interested in earning points or airmiles for my spending, i absolutely will only be using this to pay for things i know i have the cash for to build up a bit of a credit rating prior to moving out to the US.

any suggestions/advice/similar experiences that you think might help me?

:D

p.s i currently have a Natwest Student Account and a savings account with HSBC as well as an ISA with Abbey (both virtually empty at present though!)

HSBC, Natwest/RBS and Abbey/Santander all own banks in the USA and may be able to help you open a US bank account/credit card before you leave - HSBC certainly can.

Where are you planning to go to in the USA? - Ideally, you would want to check that bank has some branches near your location (or you can access ATM's from other banks etc.)

Do you have an income over 20k? as that is what amex require to apply.
