Following this thread
http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=1710587&highlight=antivirus
and others; I have just downloaded avira as I was having problems with AVG.
Now I can't close it down as it says not responding and if I go to task manger it tells me
"the program cannot be closed as it is locked by the system"
When did I loose the ability to use my own PC
Need to engage brain I feel, but until then can anyone help?
Thanks

In the short term a reboot will resolve your problem. In the long term I'd uninstall Avira then use a special tool to ensure AVG is completely uninstalled. Unfortunately the standard uninstaller leaves a few things left over.

Once this has gone, reboot, then install Avira again.
Do an update, full scan of your PC, then let us know if you're still having problems.

I believe Avira does this in an attempt to protect itself, if you can close it, so could a virus or trojan. I found if you reboot in safe mode and log in as administrator you can control it.
I am glad its like this, I have used other firewalls in the past (Kerio!) that were disabled by virus . You can always temporarily disable by right clicking the tray icon and setting security levels to disabled.0
