our laptop will no longer work unless plugged in at mains - any ideas on how to resolve this would be great!

First things first. The battery is inserted right? Is it loose? If not then highly likely the battery has gone.0 -

Flip the laptop over and you should see a catch or a release button. If the battery wasn't there you'd see a big hole.
