laptop problem

our laptop will no longer work unless plugged in at mains - any ideas on how to resolve this would be great!
its a compaq series cm2080 if that means anything?

First things first. The battery is inserted right? Is it loose? If not then highly likely the battery has gone.

where is the battery and where do i get a new one from if it has failed please?

Flip the laptop over and you should see a catch or a release button. If the battery wasn't there you'd see a big hole.
