BT 12 month contract issue

Hello everyone! I don't know if this even has a solution, but it is hacking me off!

In the last year I have lived in two places for work, each for 6 months. Initially I thought this would be fine, 6 + 6 = one 12 month BT contract, needed for broadband everywhere (couldn't get Virgin Media and they have a min 12 month contract anyway).

However, I found out in January (moving to second job) that though I could move my phone line to my new address I had to re-new the contract for another 12 months, not just continue it. After much phoning there seemed to be nothing else to do and so I begrudgingly started a new 12 month contract.

Now I'm finished my 6 months and need to move again. I figured (though I should have asked, I have learned my lesson) that I'd be able to hand over the remaining 6 months of the contract to any new tenents, but no, since it's in my name I have to cancel and pay the remainder of it, just for the new tenents to start a new one anyway! This is madness!

Do I really have to pay the remaining 70 pounds for a phone line I won't use?? Advice on ways I could have done this better is appreciated, I looked around at the time and BT were my only option, everyone else needed an 18 contract. Sorry for the length of this, am probably rambling a bit - thanks in advance!

You will have to honour your contract - and everytime you move you will need to start a 12 month contract

another option is the post office which is just a rebranded bt line which has a monthly contract http://www.postoffice.co.uk/portal/po/jump2?catId=68600711&mediaId=19300217

    Hi pj

Did you have to pay the £70 last time you moved? If not, I assume you could just renew your contract again when you move, for yet another 12 months.

Also, in hindsight, there are providers that don't tie you in to a 12 month phone contract, such as PO, UW etc. and there are (were) a number of broadband providers that do 1 month or 3 month contracts.

    Happy days
