I understand ALL the reasons why they do it but object to a system that DEMANDS I give them my personal details or they won't sell me anything. Isn't that blackmail by another name?

Technically a shop doesn't HAVE to sell you anything, they could refuse to on the grounds that they don't like your shirt. Of course, that would make no business sense whatsoever. Most shops will still sell you things if you refuse to give your details...except as mentioned, for TV licensing.

If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.

OP: it does sound like address harvesting, and without any accompanying literature allowing you to check or uncheck boxes relating to "other offers from our approved partners" etc.

There's nothing wrong with a retailer asking if a customer would like to go on their mailing list for brochures, offers, etc.

But Screwfix has a screw loose if it thinks its no data / no sale policy is remotely acceptable -- assuming, of course, this is company policy, and not the result of some moron's personal conduct.

If and when you ever go into Screwfix again, and if you're treated in similar fashion, decline to complete the transaction and say you'll be passing on the details of your experience to the local Chamber of Commerce on the basis that Screwfix's conduct is ruining the image of local business.
